I recently discovered the rear deck vents are operated by vaccum. Can someone tell me where the vaccum line connects to in the front. What is the forward control that operates these vents?

The rear Astro Vent door operates from a vacuum source off of the HVAC control wheel. When the heat control is turned to hot, the rear door closes; when the control is on cold, the door opens. At least this is how it operates in a coupe, I am guessing a vert is the same.

Only closes when the heat control is set to hot.

I own a 73' and , either the vents are wide open all the time or they have been removed because I see NOTHING when I look inside the vents other than empty space

This is an A/C equipped car...does this make a difference?
Thanks

Actually, I think A/C cars are different, but I can't remember how or for sure. You wouldn't see the door by looking in the grilles from outside anyways, it is only visable from inside the car. What you see from the outside is just the plenum.

On factory A/C equipped cars the Astro Vent system is non-functional and the vents to the inside of the car were blocked off with plates. I guess it has someting to do with the A/C fan always running on a low setting to circulate air through the cabin.

Regards,

Jay

I now have my 1st factory NO AC car. I was amazed to find the vent door (vacuum operated) under the rear deck. My other c3s were (are) factory AC cars and I don't recall ever seeing the vent door at the back of the rear storage area. I will check tomorrow to see if it actually CLOSES when I select the temp to "hot". I have never seen it close....but I don't think I have ever LOOKED when the temp controller was moved to "hot".

That's what I like about this forum...I always learn something new.

The vacuum line runs through the center console. Some of it is rubber and some of it is tubing (at least in 1970 convertible). You can see the black rubber line in this photo just behind the shift stalk. It connects to the left wheel mechanism, runs to the right, then back along the passenger side of the console, up over the hump and under the carpet to the rear vents.

quick question about the rear vents. when the car is turned off, what position are those vents supposed to default to?

i guess more importantly, is there any way to lock them into the closed position, with out glueing them shut?

im getting really sick of not being able to keep anything in that rear storage area because it all gets soaked when it rains.

I believe there are drain tubes that route the water out of the vent area which can fill up with leaves, crud ect:...If theyre clogged then you will have water in the rear of the car
Look underneath where the vents are for rubber tubes and make sure theyre clear

Mine are wide open and I get NO water in the back

try a garden hose right down the vent, if it gets wet than the problem is from above.(put some towles down first)

Im sure there are seals/gaskets avail for these vents.
If you drive in the rain and you get water it could be coming from below.... holes or cracks in the pans

*EDIT* center row very bottom.

i think ill probably pick up that rebuild kit. the seals are atleast 20 years old on it right now.

i would drive it in the rain, but there are other problems associated with that. for instance, a dead wiper motor that i havnt gotten around to swaping out yet.

Call before you order as some of their catalog prices are out of date.
Doc Rebuild has been very good to me
Of course I only live 20 miles from their warehouse so I just call them, they pull the parts and I go and pick them up

On my vert the rear vents are open as long as the control is on full cold. Turn the dial in the hot direction any and the doors go closed.
