Default Painter's...please step inside...

I some how managed a 10 inch scratch in my new clear coat . Thank God it's not down to the base but, it is deep. Dang, there must have been a reason why I shot those 7-8 coats of clear... Anyway, my plan of attack is... to mask off 1/2 inch either side of the scratch and then lightly sand 1000...just to rough up the area. Then mix up a bit of clear, and (with small brush) dap and fill scratch. Remove masking tape, color sand and buff...what do you think?

My reasoning is: if I color sand first,(without filling) I'm going to end up removing alot of clear to get to the bottom of the scratch. Needless to say, rookie painter here Thanks Muddy

Sounds like a plan. Maybe over-reduce the clear a little to help it flow into the scratch.

Only three bass today...dang it...

On the clear..assuming each clear coat was 1-2 mils, what you are thinking should work..good luck with it...

if you paint it with the tape on there won't that make a hard line you have to sand down? I think I would very lightly sand a half inch or so both sides of the scratch, then get one of them spall touchup sprayers or an air brush and blow it on that way, thinned like big_g says. that way its already feathered on the edges.

Big-g: the scratch is on a vertical...ummm. I was thinking of a pasty mix if, its possible. So, I can apply clear on top of older clear? Thanks!

Rich: Only 3!!! Ummmm, lucky devil! We haven't been since Clear lake as my wrist is still soar . In regards to the mil's... In actual fact, I'm probably down to 5 or so after the color sanding...

Jclgodale3: Yea, I know...it's killing me,lol. But like I said...I was lucky, it's only in the clear!!! Thanks for the skill remark

Sixfooter: When I actually apply the clear, the tape would be removed. I was just thinking of masking durring the first sand, but in actual fact probably dont need it at all. I like the idea of an air brush though thanks. In fact: my neighbor (retired tranny shop owner) whom rebuilt my M20 wants me to paint his 35 coupe after seeing our paint. He wants me to attemp ghost flames!!!! Oh chit! I told him..I'd have a go at it if he bought a few books for us to read. Needless to say, the air brush would come in handy...or get myself into alot of trouble

I would repair the scratch by spraying clear, not by brushing it. First
use some 600 wet paper to feather out the scratch. To avoid going
thru the clear if the scratch is deep, I would shoot some clear before
completely feathering out the scratch. After feathering, build up with
a couple more coats of clear, extending each one slightly beyond the
last coat. Wet sand the clear coated area with 1000 wet paper.
Then mix the last coat of clear with a clear coat blender and spray it
slightly beyond the newly cleared area. Then wet sand with 1500 and
2000 paper and buff out. This technique will work well with scratches
on vertical panels.

Mark: sounds like a nice technique... what is a clear coat blender? Thanks Muddy

Clear coat blender is added to clear coat to make it flow better.
Both PPG and Dupont sell such a product.

In the PPG line, the product name is Blend Ease, product no. DX 840.
You spray it on the edges of the last clear coat to help melt in the
edges. You can visit PPG's web site to see a product sheet for this
item.
