It appears the battery was/is the issue. Once I got home with the battery being charged all day the voltage was 12.9 V and the starter turned over before I had the ignition turned all the way to start. Started four or five times with no problems. I got the HVAC blower motor connected to the 13.5 + volts at the alternator and everything is fine tonight.

Thanks for y'all's help.

Once I get the blower motor completed I'll post some results on its performance.

Roger

I never heard of that.......the battery must be acting like a big capacitor and you instantly discharge it. Interesting.

Probably had the doors open and the interior lights were on, or the ignition was on, draining down the battery.

My guess is it was just a coincidence, and bat was draining anyway

The battery wasn't totally dead, it just didn't have the oomph to crank the engine. Shorting an older battery briefly to ground like that is often enough to "take the wind out of its sails".
