May not be the bearings. Sounds like a spring has broken in the emergency brake and one of the shoes is dragging. You will definitely hear it backing up. Probably won't hear it moving forward.
I agree that is doesn't sound like a bearing. If you do have to get at the rear bearings I would suggest you get a manual. They all explain the procedure and its a pain in a$$ compared to doing front bearings.
Trailing arm comes off yes, if you do remove them, mark how many shims on each side of the trailing arm. And if you have to change bearings or replace e-brake springs, hope your rotors dont have rivots in them major PIA, and will need a drill press to get them out. Hopefully it's a simple fluid change for ya
You can check the condition of the wheel bearings by jacking up the car and checking for slack. You could even remove the brake caliper and half shafts and spin the tire to listen to the bearing. Dry grinding sound is not good. If the bearing checks out bad, remove the whole trailing arm and rebuild it. You would be a glutton for punishment if you try to do it on the car and the trailing arm bushings are probably shot too.
Careful, this could lead to a big case of "while I'm at it" cause you are just a few more bolts away from having the rearend out and then you could replace all the bushings etc. in the rear.
