I'm looking at a used motor to purchase and the seller tells me its from a corvette I know at one time I saw information regarding the breakdown of the engine codes but I can't find that does anyone have the link or can decode these numbers that are on the block 136417403 V0306 ckz thanks
Yep. It's a Corvette block. The CKZ code idicates a base engine 350 CID '72-'77. V0306 is the plant code and engine assembly date. V for Flint, Michigan, engine assembly plant and 0306 for March 6th.
The engine pad should also be stamped 1SXXXXXX which indicates Chevrolet (1), St. Louis (S) and the consectutive unit number of the Corvette it came out of.
Please help with my education;
When someone has a "matching numbers" vette, they could have a replacement engine if it is the "same" engine from another vette within a reasonable time period from the build?
Just trying to understand as it doesn't seem that thier are numbers corresponding to the VIN....................

no
matching numbers is a very overused and often abused and misused term.
Matching numbers means that the vin direvitive is properly stamped on the motor, besides being the correct casting number and date.
it ORIGINALLY meant that if the numbers matched than it was the original motor in the car.
Nowadays people will find a correct casting block with a correct date code for their car, have it restamped and call it matching numbers - it IS matching numbers but the original purpose of the term, meaning the orignal motor, is now different in this context. People will do this to get a higher resale on the car. Some people will even to to the extent of trying to pass a replacement moroe with the correct casting and date codes but without the VIN direvitive stapmed on the pad as a matching numbers car but that is entirely wrong.
Personally, I don't bother to ask if it's 'matching numbers" anymore, I ask the more pertinent question which is "is it the ORIGINAL motor".

Check the pad more closely. 136417403 is not a GM block part number. I suspect the block is a 3970010 which you are likely to find on the belhousing flange, driver's side, rear. There will also be a casting date with it.
I'm wondering whether your 136417403 stamping is actually 1S6417403.
