Going to check out a '67 Impala for another forum member tomorrow. He's not concerned with #s matching, just the frame & rust issues. Any advice?
Thanks,
Tony
Frames are pretty stout but you still need to inspect. Body rot issues are in typical areas, windshield, floor, and trunk pans (especially in convertibles) as well as quarters and wheel housings. Beware of rust under a vinyl top. After you look at the car and determine what it will need, check parts availability. A lot of parts are available but they are limited compared to Camaro's or Corvettes for example. "Super Sport" and "SS" are different models, so beware of SS clones. For example this one at a lot near me doesn't have the correct SS hood or markings so a build sheet would be needed to verify it.
The guys at Showdown are nuts. Don't give them the time of day.
I had my 442 appraised there a few years ago and they didn't know dick about it. I had to more or less write the appraisel and give them $50.
As for the Impala, like any other GM car, check for rust in the front quarters and where the firewall joins the floorpan. Also on top of the cowl behind the windsheild wipers. These are common places for rust on these cars along with the rear quarter behind the wheels.
They made a ton of these cars, so major parts should be easy to find. Where you run into trouble is shifter consoles, fender emblems, and other unique parts. As long as these are all there and it is rust free, make an offer if the price is fair.
