Can anyone explain or post a photo of how the T-Tops are supposed to be stored in the rear of a 71? Currently my rear deck is filled with 3 stereo amps, a bazooka subwoofer and a pair of 6x9 speakers from the previous owner (a part time musician ). I really don't like not being able to store the tops in the car and am considering changing the stereo setup to allow storing the tops. I think I can replace the 3 amps with a single one in one of the rear compartments. I don't really NEED a sub and am not sure if the 2 6x9's need to be pulled from the rear of the deck.
I bought a set of folding soft tops, so I've got room for the sub, amp, changer, tops, and a little luggage, too. Unfortunately, they're pretty hard to find.
Thanks for the picture. What did you mount your rear speakers to and what size are they? I assume the tops are in the bag on top of each other. Is the strap a standard part that came with the car?
yeah, the tops are just in the standard vinyl leather bags stacked on each other. They stay put pretty well with no strap, but I had it so there's not much harm in putting it in. 71's might have had an X-strap instead of the Y-strap, I don't remember when they changed the design, but its stock too.
The speakers are just 6x9 pioneers I had laying around the garage after I upgraded the speakers in my grand am. They're mounted to 1/8" plywood attatched to the fiberglass lip at the top of the storage compartment in back and the tops of the wheel wells with small steel L-brackets. I still need to find some better grills and some tan carpet for them to finish the job, and I would probably build something a litte more substantial if I was planning on running any kind of power through them(amp), but for my purposes they work fine and fit really well.
Here is a pick of the back of my 70. It was a pick I used to show someone the seat belt setup but you can see the straps. It should be like a 71 since that is a carry over year. It is not like a 73 at all. You use the two straps and put one top on each side. I never really did try to do it but the sides of the back are molded to fit them.
