Default information and references needed

I was hoping you folks could direct me with some good reference material:
My car is a 68 vert. with hard top.

Are those GM assembly manuals any good? If so wheres the best place to get them?

What books are good references for restoring this car?

Vin number is 194678S401273. What books can I buy to learn as much about the originality of this exact car as possible. I have noticed descrepancies in some books so I want a reliable reference.

Why doesnt the tank sticker have the vin# on it? How do I know it is the right one?

If it is, who and where is dealer 175
The order number is 20899
Ident. No. is 802510

I have manual brakes. If I want to go to power brakes, do I simply change out the master cyliner with a power brake master cylinder?

Anyone have pictures of the tank straps and how the tank mounts. The tank is out and all I see is 2 straps hanging?

Thanks in advance for your insight!

Assembly Instruction Manual is very good resource. I refer to mine A LOT. Mine came with the car, but it says Mid-America on the cover. Try there.

Other good books are the Corvette Black Book for info on model years, build, options, etc. For basic repairs, I use a Chilton or Haynes. There are LOTS of other restoration books out there. Someone else on here may know the best.

Found your tank sticker, huh? Lucky you. Don't ask me, all I had was a big, dirty, glue blob on mine.

I have manual brakes. But I like mine, and I'm keeping them. So, I don't know that either.

I DO know how the tank mounts because I just got done doing it. The "hook" end of the straps goes through the slots in the front support. The "L" shaped ends go through the square holes in the rear support. They are then tightened down by a long bolt going through the support & the welded nut on the L end of the strap. Make sure you put anti squeak on the supports before installing.

2 out of 4 = 50% Not bad. Maybe you can find someone else with half a brain to answer your other questions.

You will have to get the vacuum booster for the brakes also. Advance Auto sells booster/MC combinations for ~100.00 online.

Appreciate the information so far. Actually when I received the car the tank was out of it. The previous owner gave me the tank and the sticker. Amoung other things in this posting I am trying to learn if this is really the original one or not but don't know how to go about it.

Go to www.ncrs.org Order the 68-69 Judging Guide for your car.

The tank stickers did not have the VIN in 68.

Besides the dealer number, you should see a Zone number. You need that # too.

Dealer 175 is different within each of 20-30 Zones back in 68.

Definitely get the assembly manual...the most used resource that I have. Tank goes in with two straps. Get the manual and you'll see how the tank goes in.

Corvette by the Numbers 1955-82 is an excellent reference for numbers and technical details. Well worth it.

I think I am missing a piece on the frame, or something that mounts to the frame. I have the 2 straps, but what do the hooked ends attach to? Seems like the straps go over the top, so what holds the tank underneath?
I will get the assembly manuals but though I can get a quick answer.

Based on what eileenthevette says I think I am missing the front support? Anyone know where to get that. Is it bolted on the frame or integral to the frame? I don't see it in Ecklers or Corvette America catalogs.

The support bolts to the frame. The tank sits on top of it.

Strange that yours is missing. If you don't find it, you might want to post a want to buy in the c3 parts for sale.

Dr. Rebuild probably has one, if not, there several Corvette only salvage yards, google them.

If you want to convert to power brakes & don't care about numbers, then I'd install a hydrabrake system, of course you must have a power steering pump.

A, the support looks like this (Minus the desk chair)

This is one of the slots the hook end of the strap goes into

Each end of the support has two holes...

...that bolt to the frame here.

The assembled part should look like this

Thanks Eileenthevette, I appreciate the time you took to explain in detail. Now I have to find one! Also I thought there was some sort of mechanism for tightening the straps? You know anything about that?

Welcome to the '68 Club. We '68 owners are a little screwy.

By all means order the '68 assembly instruction manual. It will go a long, long way toward answering the questions you already have concerning your '68. There are diagrams in the AIM showing you the gas tank installation and what you'll need to convert to power brakes. Order a reproduction owner's manual at the same time if you don't have one.

The VIN does not appear on the tank sticker because the sticker (actually a copy of the Corvette build order) was printed before the VIN was assigned to the car. You are likely to find a penciled number on your sticker (1-500). This would be the job number assigned to the car on the asembly line. It has nothing to do with the VIN and served only as an aid factory workers. The same number might be found in grease pencil in various places around the body.

The 1968 NCRS Judging Manual makes interesting reading and contains specific information for '68 owners.
