Anyone got any input to how easy it would be to replace the front wheel bearings, starting to squeek a little, i just want to be proactive before a problem occurs, any tips ? Any help appreciated, thanks
Remove the tire, move caliper up and hang out of way, don't break the lines and use a piece of wood or socket to hold the pads in place, remove the dust cap and cotter pin in the nut, remove the nut, spcer, and outer bearing, put the nut back on and then pull the rotor off with a hard jolt, the inner bearing and seal will stay on the spindle. Use a brass drift to drive out the races from the hub, wassh it out, install the new races, pack bearings and install inner bearing and new seal, install rotor, pack the inner ID of the hub with some grease but do not over pack it, install the out bearing, tighten nut while spinning the wheel in forward rotation, back off the nut, snug by hand and this will get you close. You can then dial in the endplay to .001-.002". When down check the rotor runout with a dial indicator and correct if necessary
(over .003"). Wheel should spin smooth not loose and no binding. Assemble the caliper and check pedal for firm feel.
Look up info on the endplay adjustment- I think Norval and Duke wrote excellant procedures for this and there is a lot on runout as well.
