I am going to get rid of the computer in my 81. I have the motor out and will be replaceing it next year. I am going to replace the carb and distributor so I can do away with the computer, I hate it! Question, can I now eliminate the EGR valve and the solenoids that go with the EGR valve? I hope so because that will clean up a lot of junk in the engine bay. Thanks in advance.
If you are removing the computer, you can also remove all of the controlled equipment. The EGR can be blocked (or use a manifold that doesn't have one), the air pump, controls and the solenoids can be removed. You will also need to remove the carburetor, as it will now go full rich without an ECM telling it what to do (failsafe), and the distributor will be useless with the same ECM controlling the timing.
Don't pitch the goods in case you're interested in restoring the system some time in the future. However, if you are going to pitch them, send them to me. I have a good friend who teachs automotive programs at a community college who was wishing he had a CCC system to assemble for instructional purposes, for "historical training and instruction"! I'm sure he would be thrilled to have the pieces and assemble a system for his courses.
