is there a way to tell the authenticity of the color if the trim tag says "special". i'm assuming this means it's rare, not sure how rare. There's a good looking black 72 on ebay (200031654917) and i'm thinking about checking it out. Any idea how much a special paint code would add to the value of the car?
A build sheet would clinch the rarity, however it's too easy to order up a new trim tag with the "SPEC" code so it doesn't add any value to me since it is not documented. The photo of the tag is poor quality as well. I would proceed with caution due to the poor pictures and lack of description detail. 18k is not a bad price but this is a must see in person car, not everything is being disclosed. Also 94% is not a good rating for only 15 sales. Usually sellers with a good quality item with nothing to hide will include plenty of large hi res photos and a written description that will bore you to death.
If this truly is a 'spec' car, to be judged at an NCRS meet and not loose major points, it will have to be shown in primer only (the way it left the factory) or the owner would have to have proof that it was painted a special colour at the factory.
Such a car would not command a premium price in my book.
A 72 with a SPEC trim tag that is very well documented will command a premium. And if andbody thinks that it is no big deal, when was the last time they saw one?
the car is within a reasonable driving distance from me, so I could make arrangements to go see it to check out the condition of the car. I was wondering if there would be any clues i could look for while looking at it up close as far as the paint goes; but it sounds like the way to tell if the SPEC color is authentic is through documentation...which this car does not appear to have. Regardless it still might be a decent deal for a '72, it just sounds like I shouldn't expect it appreciate any more than any other '72 which i thought could be the case.
I almost bought a 1973 convertible in black with the "spec" code. If was a long distance from me and the final cost was out of my reach. I have since learned more about them in this group and it may have been a good deal.
