I got rid of my engine fan and replaced it with a puller. It had no problem keep my GM crate engine cool while idling around the Car Craft Summer Nationials car show on a hot summer day.
Thinking Of Changing Out The Fan On My 78-currently Has A Push Fan With Clutch {that Rattles Until Its Warmed Up A Bit}
Any Suggestions ??
Do you mean the fan clutch is loose or wobbling? Because if it is,you should also replace your water pump as well,as they share the same shaft.....and your pump will go next..
You must mean a pull fan with a clutch-that rattles
Suggestion-replace the clutch(and the pump)
If it's a stock 78 fan than it is a pull fan, and you will need to replace both the water pump and fan clutch. Also while you have it apart check the fan blades for cracks. Replace the fan if you find any cracks!!
The Fan Thats On It Is A Push Fan ! The Noise {rattle} I Hear Is Only Heard When Its First Started. After Its Run For A Minute Or Two It Goes Away. It Only Does It When Its First Started And Never When The Engine Is Warm.

Are you absolutly sure its pushing air through the rad to the front of car or "pulling' air from the front towards the rear ? If it is pushing air from the engine side through to the front then you have the wrong fan blade on the car.

Suggestion--replace fan ,fan clutch and water pump.

I never heard of a mechanical push fan. All mechanical fans pull the air through the rad. If it is electric it wouldn't have a clutch.
If you are going electric you want a puller, They are more efficient and you will run into problems with a fan infront of the rad. When you open the hood it will hit the fan.
That said I run both. A puller behind the rad and an electric pusher in front
Why is everyone yelling? I don't know what we're yelling about.
ORIGINAL POSTER - You're a cig smoker. You're saying, with you leaning over the fender, and smokeing, that the second hand stuff that's giving me lung cancer is being pushed through the rad towards the nose of the car?
If this is true, you have two problems, and not just one. The clutch is bad, and may have damaged the water pump. The other problem is fan pitch. Can you take a few pictures of the fan while it's NOT moving? We can tell you if the blades are incorrect or not.
That Right Don't Stand In Front--cause Thats Where It Goes-its Apparent That At Sometime The Front End Has Had Some Damage And Had Been Repaired. And The Old Farmer Who Owned This Car Could Have Done Anything--so I Will Go To A Pull Fan,the Way It Should Be.
Spikesdad:
Within the last coupla weeks ... there was a post from a fellow who put up pics of very nice looking engine bay ... and then someone noticed that the fan blades had wrong pitch (WAY wrong) ... sure enough, he had an aftermarket Vbelt-driven, waterpump-mounted fan on it and the blades were made for reverse rotation. The Vbelt-driven, waterpump-mounted fan on a vette is designed to pull air from front of car through rad and into engine bay. If yours ain't doing that, it's wrong and it cannot efficiently cool.
