I am thinking about buying this 77 vette, the owner sent me pictures of the undercarriage and paint problems. Do you guys see any serious problems. He said when he first got the car the power steering blew out and he thinks that is what is on the frame etc.
To me it looks like some kind of sustained leak. One that went unnoticed for a while. I would want to see the pavement where the car is parked. Is the seller saying that there are no current leaks?
Its a 30 yr old car, some leaks are to be expected. The good news is oil is a great rust preventive. Get a look at the suspension bushings, and at the frame right in front of the back wheels.
This one actyally looks like its in better shape than mine was when I bought it.
Whats he asking for it?
He says there are no longer any leaks, he has gone through everything and fixed any problems he saw. He said he did not think the car had been undercoated, but it may have been.
From the shape of the transmission oil pan it appears to have a turbo 400 transmission. I believe that 77's had a turbo 350 but no big deal cause I think the 400 is a better transmission. What engine does it have? How is the rest of the body and interior? Undercarriage dont look bad at all just normal 30 wear. How much is he asking?
Its an l-82 350 with edlebrock carb. The body is great, straight with no cracks or spider webbing. He has totally redone the interior, new carpet, door panels, center console, He has new leather seat covers and install kit, but has not installed them. The motor is clean and been recently rebuild (within last two years) He is asking 10,500. I know you guys think that is high, but it is a nice car
Its not neccesarly high in my opinion. The car appears to look pretty clean from the pic's. Is he going to install the seat covers and other interior parts for you? How long has he owned the car? How many miles on the drive train? I pretty much guarantee most forum members here would want to sell their cars for a high price but see a differant price if they wanted to purchase a car. Good luck on your purchase and have many miles of good cruising in the car.
He has had the car about 3years, 80k miles. The only thing thats needs done is to have the seat covers installed. Is that a big job, has anyone done it? Or is it best to leave it to the pros?
If the car is still available tomorrow I think I am gonna ****** it up. I have wanted one for 30 years - since I graduated high school in 77
I don't think I would be afraid of it. It looks pretty sound. I agree that if there are leaks they couuld be fixed easily. It looked to have an overall good appearance with in one are that looked to need immediate repair.
Car looks nice - $10,500 is not high but make sure you know what you're getting.
You said it was an L-82 motor. Not a big deal HP/Performance wise (210HP vs 180HP for base motor) BUT I'd make sure it was an L-82 car and not a car wearing L-82 badges. Best way to check is the VIN, 5th position should be an X. Then check the numbers on the engine pad to make sure the vin matches the car.
BTW, 49,213 Corvettes made in 1977, only 6,148 were L-82...about 12% of production.
