Default Broken air vent controller

Hi,
I have a non-ac car and one of two little sliders that opens and closes the air vents is not working. It is really loose when you slide it and you can't hear it opening/closing the vent. Also, when you put it in the closed position it eventually just slides back down to the middle position. I took the console apart and the cable is there but it goes up into the dash and couldn't see where it was connected to. I didn't want to take the dash apart at the time so I just put everything back togetehr and figured I'd ask for help here.
Do you think I need a new cable? How much of the dash do i need to take apart to fix this?

BTW - the car is a 71

Thanks,
Paul

Left cable will route beneath the driver's dash and steering column, then run over to the kick panel vent door. Ditto for the right side cable except that it routes along the heat/defrost box and over to the vent door.

The AIM has instructions for mouting the cables and taking the slack out. The cables themselves have a little bit of built-in adjustment. You may not necessarily need to seriously undo things.

I agree ... start by pulling kickpanels to observe operation.
It could be the doors never move - or not much.
The door end is pretty easy to dismantle, but the console end
(I recall) requires digging in to get the cable out.

Thanks for your help guys. I will pull the kick panel and report back
I've been meaning to pull the kick panel anyway because the interior light doesn't always turn on when i open the passenger door. Don't know what you call the little switch in the door jam that triggers the lights but when you fiddle with it the lights turn on. So i need to get in there to check that out...maybe i can kill two birds with one stone while i've got the kick panel off. Thanks for your help.

ok that didn't take long. took the kick panel off (btw was happy to see no rust behind there) and as i suspected the vent behind the kick panel was not moving at all while I was sliding the controller back and forth. With my hand i was manually opening and closing the vent and the little slider was moving back and forth a little. I'm going to pick up the AIM because i've got a few little things like this to fix...but in the meantime do you all think there is an adjustment i can make to fix the issue? It doesn't seem like i need a new cable, it just feels like it's too loose or something and needs an adjustment.

Thanks,
Paul
