I'm trying to make sense out of muncie date coding. For example:P1T15A on the stamp. One of my books says the first 1 is for the model year of the car. The other book says the first 1 is for the date assembled. If the first scenario is true, would the transmission have been built on Dec.15, 1970? If the second scenario is true then the transmission would have been built Dec.15, 1971? Thanks for the help!
The production trannys were stamped with the "year model", not intentionaly the assembly year.
But that does leave the question open as to how they stamped "CT" service replacement trannys for over the counter sale. They could theoreticaly fit several year models as a service part so they might have been stamped differently. I leave that out on the table for a separate thread if someone else wants to stir the pot.

P = Muncie 4speed
1 = model year (not calendar year)
T = December
15 = 15th
A = M20 wide range
(Transmission built Dec 15, 1970 for 1971 car ... serial number/VIN would indicate a factory part - lack of serial number/VIN would indicate a service part)

Frank, I have "Chevrolet by the numbers", it is correct. The book "corvette 1968-1982 Restoration Guide, Richard Prince" is confusing.(1999) On page 118, top right column, second full paragraph:" the date the transmission was originally assembled". The next paragraph refers to the "number representing the last digit of the model year". Prince's book is generally pretty good. Thanks for the help.
