I tightened up the lash adjustment on top of the steering box, I was able to take out most of the slop. The steering is a little tight but for now thats ok. The problem that I am having now is that the power steering pump is squealing, real bad, even when I am going straight. It had not been doing this before. Why would adjusting the lash make the power steering pump squeal?
Well, it didnt make any noise a week ago, before I made the adjustment. And there isnt a large puddle on the ground.
Humour me and check the fluid level
I remember a car I had that used to squeal whenever I was parallel parking. Presumably this was caused by increased load. I suppose that the lash asdjustment could have done the same thing. Have you tried loosening the lash adjustment a little? You may not want to do this because of the added slop in the steering, but at least youll know the cause. I have seen posts that lash adjustment simply increases the load on already worn internal components in the steering gear and will only last a short time before a rebuild is needed. I've never done this so don't know if it is the case.
I agree. I haven't had my 75 long, but one thing I have noticed:
There is never a large puddle underneath, but I know the pump is going bad because I have to keep an eye on the fluid level and usually add about 1/2 small bottle about once every two weeks.
