In my '73 L82 the A/C compressor is shot, anytime it engages it wants to seize up and not turn at all. Even if I just turn the heater on, it still tries to seize, I have been told that even when just using the heater sometimes the compressor will engage.
Since it's illegal to work on A/C stuff without certification around here and I don't have the several hundred dollars I know the repair will cost, I want to bypass the A/C compressor so I can at least use my heater.
Right now the belt goes around the A/C compressor, crankshaft pulley, and fan pulley.
My question is, can I just take the belt off completely, or do I need to get a shorter one in the mean time that will still connect the crankshaft pulley to the fan pulley?
yep, that's what I did until I actually took out the compressor. The pulley was so used to having the compressor belt on there that it now makes a slight squeal since it's missing a belt. Now there is only one belt on the side, so it's like it's being pulled sideways. Keep that in mind if you decide to remove the compressor.
