Default 76 - Door Ajar warning light

Every time I turn a corner real hard this light turns on. I'm guessing there is a loose wire somewhere in the car:

My question is:

Is the door ajar light meant to come on when the driver/passanger doors are opened? Mine does not.

If it is not meant to when the doors are opened, what is it for?

Thanks in advance.

Its meant to come on when the door is not fully closed.

So the door switch should turn the ajar light on if the switch is partially pressed?

Mine doesn't.

Guess I'll have to track down a wiring diagram and possibly new switches.

Sounds like a short/wire at the switch. You also want to check to ensure the plunger on the switch is being depressed when the door closes.

The door ajar light should come on when the door is opened. When the door is closed completely, the door ajar light should go off. You will notice that a new door ajar switch will seem longer than your old one. The first time that you close the door, its shaft should adjust to the proper length to be able to properly detect whether or not your door is closed completely.

If the switch isn't too worn, you can sometimes pull the shaft out to its full length again, and close the door to "readjust" it again. I've had this work a couple of times. If the switch is past its prime, then it will not stay at the proper length, and have to be replaced.

Sometimes you can also improvise by simply putting a rubber stop where the switch makes contact on the door, and that will allow the switch to operate the door ajar light properly. NCRS judges, however, won't be too fond of that solution.

No--when it is "not" depressed......when it is "released".
These switches are the ones closest to the rear of the car.
Some of the guys on the forum have said the aftermarket switches are not good...so buy the GM ones.I have been lucky to have had a supply of the GM ones so I havnt experienced the problem with the after market ones.

Unscrew the switch short the wires the light will go out (tape up the wires there HOT ) Go for a ride go around a corner If the light does not come on re-place the switch. Been there done that.

Thanks guys.

I'll look into this after work tonight.

Taping the wires together and going for a drive makes so much sense, why didn't I think of that!

Cheers

Allan.

My 76 has just one spade terminal on it and no cable with a fitting on but ther is a black cable exiting in to the seat well and it’s earthed down adjacent to the exit hole
