Ther are two, one is near the trans cross member on top of the frame and the other is just aft of the rearend cross member also on top of the frame and both on the left side.
Top of the frame rail, driver's side, about where your billfold would be if you were sitting in the car. You cannot see this number with the body on. Second stamping is also on the driver's side, top of the frame rail, in front of #4 body mount. Some folks say they can see this number with the body on, but only after scraping away frame crud and using a mirror and a flashlight. I could not see this number on my '68 or my '80, but you might end up luckier than me. Remember, using the mirror will give you a mirror image (backwards).
VIN derivative was also stamped on the original tranny. If you have hunch the tranny might be original, it could be worth your while to crawl under and take a look.
