Is anyone using an overhead hoist? what is it mounted to? What equipment are you using?
I have started a body off restoration and I'm using an engine hoist. I've got a few issues, but that's a whole other discussion. I'd like to mount an electric hoist to a support beam in my garage.
I went with a 3 ton unit from harbor freight tools - only cost $79 (on sale) and it has done a great job. A chain runs from the top hook up around 2 (side by side) 8 foot pieces of square tubing that is fairly thick and 1.5 inches on a side. It spans 5 joists and is in a very strong area in the attic above the garage.

The only electric hoists that I found capable of lifting 1000+ pounds were in the $1,000+ range. If you read the online manuals for the less expensive winches you will find that they are designed for horizontal use only.
I just bought a 1-ton chain hoist for $70.00 that worked great for lifting the body off the 72.
To be safe you might want to build a support structure out of 2x8 or 2x10 lumber and attach it to the support beam. Make sure you put the eye bolt up toward the center of the beam to avoid this:
We put additional 2x12's on either side of the beam, moved the eye bolt higher and didn't have any problems after that.
I used a 1300lb electric hoist. Mounted to a 2" channel steel that spans about 10 joists. My joists are 12" on center. Used it to left the body off the car then to left engine and tranny. Then put them back.
