Default 1968 Corvette Convertible

Hi Guys very cool website you guys have here! I was directed here by some guys on the Mopar board that I frequent as I am a chrysler man at heart. Dont hate me I like all cars I just like old mopars best.
Here is why I am here I have a coworker who has a 68 convertible corvette that he has owned since 1977 that he wants to sell and I need to know what kind of money these cars bring. He really does not know anything about cars or current market values. He purchased this car when he was a teenager and drove it until 1980 when it was parked and has been moved very little since then. He tells me that it is an original 427/390hp car with a 4spd and that when he bought it the owner had pulled the original motor and put a 327 in it`s place. It is safari yellow and the interior and all exterior trim and chrome are in excellent condition. He says that the brakes go to the floor and not sure if they only need to be bled and that when he parked it it was making a noise from the rear axle shaft. It has a black soft top that is in ok condition and the car has not been started in a number of years though he says it will run and turns free. It has been garage kept all these years and has no rust whatsoever. He would like to get $10,000 for the car is it worth it? And how would I verify what the original engine was I have been told to look for a tank sticker. Is this something I can get to without removing parts? Any help or comments would be appreciated.

I'm thinking, if your not a "Corvette Guy", tell someone who is, where the deal is, that can do something with it to bring it back to it's former glory. You know, like you do with Mopars

I just talked to the owner and told him to have it towed to my shop with his AAA card so I could take a good look. I told him that even if I do not buy it I would help him clean it up a bit and send it to a new home. I would like to see it go to someone who will clean it up and enjoy it as I know it has not been beat to hell and would be a nice car for someone. When the car arrives and I take some pictures I will post them here for you guys. Thanks for your input I apprecate the help.

Hi

Suggest he would try to contact the previous owner to see, if the 427 BB engine is still somewhere. This could boost the price tag by somewhat.

Ok guys the car was dropped off this afternoon and I have had a chance to take some pictures. After talking to the owner and information given here I believe it is not a 427 but a 327/350hp car. The right rear brake is locked so at the least the rear caliper needs some attention. Bottom line is the guy wants it gone what would be a fair asking price for this thing? And how do I get to the tank sticker without taking the thing apart? Here is a link to some pictures I took today. http://www.imagestation.com/7003844/3956612270 Click on public albums and profile to view all the pictures.

Not to bad... the body and interior look ok...no major damage and if it is as rust free as you say it should be a fun project..You should check the block to see if it is original. I would shoot oyt a low price and see what happens, you can always meet in the middle

Unless GM finally found all those records we've all been waiting for all these years for, that resto package isn't going to have anything specific to your vin.

Thanks for the pics. Looks like a pretty solid car. Be sure to check the frame very carefully for rust. Especially in front of the rear tires where the frame kick-ups are. If it's a rust free car, $10k seems like a good starting point. '68's have yet to top out in the market due to their bad history, but I think they'll be a decent investment. After all, it's a one year only vette and they're not making them anymore. Eventually, I believe the bad history of the '68 will disappear in the market place. Without seeing it, I think you could probably get it or one in similar condition for a little less. Hang in there a little while longer, I'm sure many others with more knowledge than me will chime in.

First thing is check the numbers! If it matches, 8k, she needs a total restore, but a cool car when done.
On another note, Do you know if a 727 tranny will bolt up to a new 5.7/360 crate? I have a 82-85 360 on it now and don't know whether to rebuild or go new.Don't want to use a new tranny, they suck.
