Default Build Sheets

This should be an easy question... Does anyone have a phone number or website, more detailed than chevy.com or gm.com to get a reproduction build sheet? Rumor is you can find one on top of the gas tank, but I have a smoking problem and don't want to push my luck (just kidding)...

Thanks

The possibility of a build sheet on the fuel tank of a Corvette isn't a rumor. The practice started sometime during the '67 model run as an aid to assembly line workers. By 80-81 or so, the sheets were attached to the front of the tanks.

St. Louis, 1981 production shown. Note the build sheet taped to the front of the fuel tank.

It's entirely possible your build sheet is still on the tank. It's also possible what you might find may not be legible or may not be complete.

Corvette Action Center does not have copies of build sheets. For some of the 79-81 cars, Action Center can provide a copy of the dealer invoice for the car. Dealer invoice and build sheet are not the same, although the invoice was compiled from information on the build sheet. The invoice includes prices, where the car was shipped, and additional information not on a build sheet.

The NCM can provide copies of build sheets for most (but not all) of the Bowling Green built cars.

I'm sure you can page through ebay and find someone who would readily make a build sheet to your specifications and "age" it to perfection, but what's the purpose? It wouldn't be the build sheet for your Corvette. It would only be what you ordered...and paid for.

Hi

For all Vettes up to 78 or so, no original copies are available anymore unless the car was officially sold in Canada, where customs apparently took a copie for their records.
GM has no paperwork for any early sharks anymore, unless still hidden somewhere.
And even if this would still exist, I can imagine that it will never be made available to the public, last but not least because of many probably faked expensive rare cars on the market by now.

I just sold a February 68 BB convertible L36 car that still had the tank sticker ( build sheet ) on the tank. I took a foto of it through the tank lid opening, but never removed the tank to see details. It appears complete, but very dirty. The car had 95.000 miles down and the sticker is still there, so the chances are good to find it .

Good luck. Günther

The only known existing GM info starts a few weeks into the 77 production year (one department checked out the early 77 records in 1996 and never returned them, so I don't know if they've been located yet). Everything earlier (at least for US cars) seems to be lost.

No GM records are available. If the car does not have documentation with it at the time of sale, and if the tank sticker isn't present, or isn't complete, or isn't legible (any or all can occur), there isn't much any of us can do.

GM had a formal "depaper" policy. Nothing other than the required documentation was supposed to be in the car when it left St. Louis. Most of the Corvette order copies went into the trash cans at the various assembly line stations after they were no longer needed. Finding a copy of a build sheet in a Corvette is somewhat rare, but has been known to happen. This is the exception, not the rule.

Thanks everyone, looks like I'll be fishing a camera up through and around my gas tank of my 69 to see whether or not the build sheet still exists and if it does, I'll drop the tank....

I wish I could find some history on my car. I could only track it back two owners, and that guy doesn't even remember- as he was a small dealer.

On my tank sticker for my 69 it says Zone 32 Dealer 583 if you go to the NCRS web site it can decifer the codes for the dealer.
Mine was:
President Chevrolet
540 Southern Artery
Quincy, MA 02169

Unfortunatly the dealer is no longer in business

Worth the effort, I suppose, but remember: if anything is there, it's been there a very, very long time. What you find may be incomplete or might not be legible. Good luck.

I hope I can learn some new history. Is there any way to find out previous owners through the state? Even to find out if my car has lived in MI all of it's life?

Build sheets were found on the 68 to 74 cars under the back rug and/or behind the speedo/tack pod. I found pieces of my 72 in the frame while I was having it sandblasted. There was nothing left of the tank sticker except glue spots!

I'll have to check the interior spots, I've had the speedo out and don't remember seeing anything back there.
