I also hate the 3200 rpm at 70 nonsense of the th350. I like the look of the 80-82 cars and I really like the idea of the 4 speed OD tranny. Not crazy about crossfire but you have to give and take a little. I would like a paint job eventually so figure 2500-3000 for that plus the bumpers another 1000 plus the 2004r another 1500. If I could get 9-10g for my car and maybe pick up what I'm looking for for lets say 12G wouldnt I be better off?
This is probably just frustration talking,

A 80-82 that is stock is not too easy to find, then you want it to be in as good condition as yours -> you will spend money...
Now, the issues with your car are 1) two bumpers and 2) the transmission
Two bumpers are $650 plus paint, maybe $1000 alltogether
The 200R is all over Ebay for $1400 shipped
IMO - if you sell your car, then buy a f.e. '81 you'll have spent more than $2500 by the time the '81 is as nice as your '79

Look at my recent threads - if you're stubborn (and cheap) enough you can paint your car at home. Stubbornness outweighs the lack of experience...

I know what your talking about....you want a vette you can get in and drive and enjoy (maybe take your wife for a ride in).....a car that when something breaks it's not because bubba f...it up. These type of cars can be pricy. I sold my 22K mi 82CE about 5 yrs ago for over 20K. Granted it was a CE but again that was 5 yrs ago. So if that's what you want be prepared to pay the price.

Look at it this way - ball park numbers. I sold my first 2-tone car for $7,500 in 2003 (gave $5,500 for her in '98). Conservatively, it would of cost $2K for a motor rebuild (back to stock) and $4K for paint - again, back to stock. I'd already done the tranny but she needed other big $$ odds and ends; rear-end rebuild, rear wheel bearings, etc as she had over 150K on the clock so I figured another grand here - total $7K worth of work comes to $14,500...told I broke even on the trade
!
