Can anyone tell me if ANY of the 1981's were produced with the Crossfire engine? There is a 1981 listed on Ebay as a 1981 but the engine and badging are the Crossfire. Good looking car btw, but it would seem to me that the discrepancy could affect the actual value of the vehicle.
VIN is 1G1AY8764B5100574 if that helps.
Thanks,
Tom
yeah, that's an 82..ask the guy if the tacho has a crossfire decal on it.
Also, ask him for the engine stamp pad info, the numbers there will tell you the real VIN
It'll be 1G1AY878XC51##### where x = the check digit and #### the prodution number of the car (stamped on stamp pad), the check digit is easily found, just try any number from 0 to 9 in the carfax free lemon check, only 1 number will be accepted...instead of going through the time consuming calculation process carfax will calculate it for you. Then maybe do some checks on that number, if it comes back stolen you know someone swapped VIN#'s
It's got to be an '82 but the VIN is for an 81 so who knows...RED FLAG for sure!
The emblems are correct (front and rear) for an '82 as is the CF motor. I zoomed in on the tach/speedo but lost resolution so no way to verify from the pictures...someone would have to go WAAAAY out of their way to convert an '81 to a CF...and as the proud owner of an '82 you'd have to wonder why?
The radio, speakers in the tranny tunnel, and pin stripes on the hood and body are not original, the center arm rest is a popular 78 - 82 add on that should lift right out. The interior looks great! The plug wires and dist cap have been replaced as well...getting nit-picky.
The paint looks pretty good considering the source - an ebay photo. The rear cap in pic #3 shows the contrast between the paint on the body and the end cap. These never really matched very well and the end caps fade quick especially on the silver and gray.
All in all, not a bad car for the current $9K bid IF you're in the area and can get hands & eyes on the car, title and can match the VIN to the block...it may be a wrecked 81/82 hybrid. I’d pass unless the car is within reasonable distance for a look-see. Good luck!
Not surprising, although the seller CorvetteAuto.com did respond back to me, he never posted my question in the ad or modify the ad to alert potential buyers that there could be a conflict. He's just a guy trying to make a buck.
I guess it is just our little secret unless someone else asks him.

This message was sent while the listing was active.
corvetteauto is the seller.
It could be a 82 but the title says 81 which could be a error. It will be sold to the last Bidder so GOOD LUCK Thanks Tom 724 388 7924
I dont find that acceptable, the guys screenname is corvette auto and he doesnt know what kind of car he has???? I think a call to the local PD might be approriate, could be a tag job. Like said previously no one is sticking a crossfire in an 81 even if they got it for nothing, better off goin diesel, something stinks.

And, this guy has something like 30 vettes for sale on his website.
One thing in his favor is that he will let you out of the deal if you are not completely satisfied with the vehicle when you see it after the auction ends and you go to pick it up.
I'll still be looking for other late '80's C3's. Just not not from him.
On his website, he has the car listed as a silver 81, priced at $16,900. I think the hubcaps on the 82 rally wheels have a white background - which that car appears to have from the pics on the website. My 81 hubcaps have a black background. I'd say it is either a titling error or something more nefarious. It isn't an 81 franken-fire..
That guy is from my old stomping-grounds in Turdsylvania, about 35 miles from my old place:
maybe 80crabvette or C3Tim, who still shovel-snow and pay taxes there, know something about him.....
This guy has a pretty good reputation in the Pittsburgh,Pa area. He has sold several cars to people in our Corvette Club and 1 guy has bought 2 Corvettes from him. BUT, he's still a dealer so if something looks wrong it probably needs a closer look.
