STS116 Launch Photos
Here are a few photo I took from my front yard a little while ago of the Space Shuttle as it took off from Cape Kennedy about 50 miles away. Man it's great to live here in Florida! Hope you enjoy! Glenn
Saw the flame from Ft Lauderdale. My street runs north and south, so we have an unobstructed view. Was the first view of a night launch for my 7yr old.

I know how excited your son must have been to see his 1st launch, @ night. I remember when I took my 80+ year old grandmother to see her first shuttle launch down at the causeway across the river from Kennedy. Can you imagine how she felt. She was around at the beginning of flight and saw all of the advancements over her life time, then saw the launch of men into space before she died! I know it will be an exciting journey for your son as space flights advance during his life time. Very cool! Glenn
LOL
I guess I should have been more specific.
Here is a pic of her.
We took her to Hard Rock in Orlando for her bday last fall and stopped at Roger's because she likes Corvettes too. We were originally dissappointed to find out we were having a girl, but from the first time we met, I would have it no other way.
Took my mother to see a launch when she was around 80, didn't tell her where we were going, and she just bugged us until we told her. Then she said it was stupid of us to drag her all the way up there, because she could see it on tv. After she felt the ground shake and heard the deafening roar her mouth just hung open for a while and said "It's not at all like tv" You're right, the things they've seen in their lifetime.
BTW, do they still have the passes you can mail for?

Yes Sir Glenn...That shuttle is one bad azz bottle rocket.
Let me share just part of a Shuttle story. I had spent the night at a hotel in Myrtle Beach while on a trip at work. I shared a van ride to the airport with a very nice fellow who turned out to be Challenger shuttle pilot ... David Brown. We talked briefly about flying...etc... He was traveling on my flight through ATL that morning on his return to Melbourne, FL. As we exited the van, we said Thanks for sharing the van and yada yada yada. Then he reached in his pocket and handed me a NASA Mission Patch .... STS-107 ! Less than a month later STS - 107 was lost during re-entry. As I watched the news coverage of the doomed flight that Saturday morning, It really bothered me as I realized that the guy that I had met in that short van ride was on that doomed mission. You just never know! I will always keep that NASA Mission Patch and be sure that my kids know where it came from.

Great pictures, I didn't think that it was going off tonight. We were eating dinner and all of a sudden we heard the rumble and ran outside but it was too late it was alread out of sight. Thanks for the pictures, I love the night lauches.
I was there Thursday night, perfect spot about 10 miles away on a beach, could see it on the pad in the distance and it was a no go because of the clouds. Had to go back to WI this AM, sure was disapointed that I missed it! But I did get the T-Shirt.
Thanks for the pics! They bring back memories from about 10 years ago. We had a meeting at the Marriott Sawgrass south of Jacksonville and the shuttle launch was during the middle of the night. The hotel opened up the roof for viewing and had coffee up there for the chill.

BTW Lars......PM me when I can send you the Q-Jet off the 74 BB.
The 72 Small block still runs fantastic after your "rebuild".
I have thought about trying it myself, but there are just
too many little parts. ! Scares me!

Fiancee 'thought'
it was to be launched shortly after 9:00 PM last night (Saturday 9 December ), so we decided we go for a short ride, get a few soft-drinks, find an un-obstructed view to the East (we are in Lakeland ), and watch:
I walk into a 7/11-store, and the kids behind the counter are looking-out the window like something is going-on.....
I get 2 bottles of juice, pay, walk-out the door, only to see a fireball across the street, climbing into the skies, through the clouds!!!!!

Great story. I'm sure you meant Columbia when you said Challenger.
I have worked on the Space Shuttle Main Engine program for the past 9 years. Leaving this week to take up another challenge. I was sitting at a console in the Huntsville Operations Support Center on both Thursday (which scrubbed) and Saturday. Monitoring the SSMEs. I had the first shift, so I wasn't there when the Shuttle launched. Great pictures on NASA TV though.

Fred. No, I wouldn't. I also have a sad story of feeling like I lost a close friend upon the death of astronaut, Maj. Ed White in the Appollo 1 fire on the pad.
I was serving on the USS Wasp CVS-18 in 1965 when we were the prime recovery ship for the Gemini GT-4 flight, the one when Maj. Ed White became the first American to walk in space. We picked the capsule out of the water and brought it on board, along with the crew, White & James McDivitt. They spent 3 days on board as we took them and the capsule back to Mayport, Fla. We ate with them, played games in the hanger deck and just had an all around great time up close. We even got to walk up to the Gemini capsule and touch it & look inside.
When he died, I too, cried and felt a personal loss, so I understand and know what you feel also. It's always sad when hero's die and especially tough when you've met them. Glenn
