Default Steering wheels

I have the stock one on mine. Wondering what others are using. I tried one a few years ago and the rim was smaller and blocked the gauges. What are you running. Pictures if you have them.

I put a wheel from an 81 in mine. I had Chuck Pelton fix it up for me. It was red leather and black spokes. Chuck recovered it in black leather and brushed the spokes to sorta look like the stock wheel. I like the way it turned out. If you got the Corvette Enthusiast Jan 07 issue you can see a pic of it there. Here is one on my photobucket.

Is it about the same depth also. I don't have tilt or tele on mine.

Gordon, I am like you, no tilt or tele. I needed just a little more room. I am about 5'10". The depth seems to be the same. The diameter, maybe an inch smaller. I like the way it turned out and is not really noticeable as not stock unless you are familiar with what you are looking at.

I put the Grant black leather one on my Corvette a long time ago. It has polished slotted spokes & a shallower dish which moves it closer to the dash. Nice, direct bolt on about 13 1/2".
Pic. on website.

Ideal if tall.

Stock 77 up about 14" which you may prefer.

Space is not a huge issue. Being 5'7" a small wheel is not needed to get in and out easily.

I am sure someone knows about this one. There was a time, 68 or 69, that you could still get the teak steering wheel. Take good care of that wheel. If it is orignal and in good shape, it is like hens teeth.

The C2 wheels are 16", not really suitable for a C3 where you start with a 15". A 16" wheel is a bit like driving a Greyhound Bus. It also limits thigh space, wheel to seat cushion, making entry and exit a little difficult. And I weigh 175lb.

I recently picked up a used C3 (15") cushion grip wheel and refurbished it for installation in the spring. If anyone has their heart set on a teak wheel I can provide a contact person who does them. I believe he can do them in either 16" or 15". The cost is about $600.

I like the Grant wheels OK but I wanted mine to be like the original. I just received one from Corvette Central and it is very close to the orig. and color matched the red interior, which was replaces about 18 mo. ago, almost perfect. $220.
I thought about having mine re-covered but what would I do if it was not good.

Hi

If it has 16 inch diameter, it is a original 68 wheel.
It is not wood , but plastic.
The original 69 wheel should be 15 inch , black rubberlike plastic with a silver band on the outside, very nice looking wheel.

The original 68 steering wheels are somewhat rare and worse some money. The crack is perfectly repairable as it is plastic.

I also have this Grant steering wheel in my 68, this to get a decent grip and also to be able to get into the seat , having no tilt column option.

I did locate a perfect 68 steering wheel and will get it for 200 Euros.
Will not install it, but nice to have for my 68.

I also still have a perfect 69 steering wheel. Will probably sell it once I have the 68 wheel.

Günther
