When I did my 68, I removed the emergency brake console screws on each side near the handle end, then I removed the one bolt that comes through the rear bulkhead and fastens into the back of the emergency console. (You need to get at this bolt through the storage compartment area) Gently lift the front of the emergency console up to about a 45 degree angle, and slide off the old handle lside, fit the new one over the handle and feed it into the slots on the emergency console and slide the other end of the new slide under the shift console as you lower the console.
Lower the emergency console back into place letting the piece you just replaced gradually slide back into its 'home' position.
It does not involve disassembling the handle, but rather raising and lowering the emergency console.
Don't forget that bolt coming through the bulkhead or you will snap or crack the emergency console. A very small amount of grease on the slide can't hurt and will make it easier for it to slide 'home'.
You may have to move the emergency handle itself back and forth to make it easier to 'feed' the new slide into the grooves on the emergency brake console.
Sounds involved but is really quite simple.
Good luck, Merry Xmas
Kurt

Best way I found to replace it is to first remove all the side screws & rear bolt from the console. You can access that rear bolt from the center storage compartment. While lifting the rear of the console with the handel forward, work the old slide out. Be carefull of pwr window switches & wire. Don't lift too high!! The new slide should have a split in the casting to allow you to slip it onto the handel. With the handel foreward, start the new slide into the console channel. You're going to have to lower the console into place & work the slide in at the same time...
Hope I've helped ya some...

The real problem is removing the 1/4 inch (?) bolt that attaches the parking brake console to the "firewall," the thin steel wall behind the drivers and passengers seats. To get at this bolt, you ordinarily need to remove the plastic frame for the three compartment doors in the storage compartment. (For later C3's it's two compatment doors.) Removing this plastic frame is easy, but dangerous. It will crack very easily, especially if it's an aged early C3. To remove this frame, I suggest removing the three doors first. They are very heavy and will contribute to cracking the frame. Even with the doors out you will have to flex the compartment door frame to clear the rear wheel housings and also possibly the shoulder belt retractor housings. Once this three door (two door later C3) frame is removed, it's easy to get at the 1/4 inch bolt and remove the parking brake console.

One good thing is that if you crack the compartment door frame, you can get a relatively inexpensive exact repro from Mid America Corvette (ex De Witts tooling). Some people, leave that 1/4 inch bolt out so thay can remove the parking brake console more convenienly. If you leave the bolt out, the console, prone to breaking anyhow, will be weaker and more easily broken .

I have to disagree with you.
You need not remove the plastic frames.,
Opent the compartment with the tire jack in it. Lift out the tub above the jack. Now slide your hand in between the rear bulkhead and the CENTER glove box and you will feel the bolt.
Use a 1/4 inch drive ratchet with correct socket or use a box wrench.
No need to remove frames or doors or anything except the lift out bucket above the jack.
Have done this many times.
Very easy
