While I got my motor out and am waiting for the spring to get here I thought I would try and gather up some information. I have an 81 with a stock engine. The engine is out and will be replaced with a new crate engine. I am just getting a basic "universal 350" crate motor. I am not going to use the computer anymore.
Now, I am getting the B&M converter lockup controls from Summit for the tranny. My question is how do I hook up the EGR valve without the computer? Do I really need the EGR valve anymore? I will be getting a new carb and distributor to replace the computer controlled ones. Thanks for any help. H ave a very Merry Christmas.
I dont think that 81's need to be smogged in N.Y. and if you have a friendly neighboorhood garage to inspect your car then you are home free as far as visuals go, so no I dont think you'd need the EGR . Good luck,,,Peace,,,Moosie
Moosie is right, you won't need EGR. Pack it away with the rest of the smog stuff in case one day you do need it. In the meantime, get an Edelbrock 2101 manifold(without EGR) and use that in place of your smog manifold
Richard-Hope you're having a good Christmas
Was thinking about the engine you're getting. I've bought them before, the cams in these things are just as universal as the engine is
Definitely put in a different cam, especially if you plan on upgrades to the exhaust system, but if you do it yourself you'll invalidate the warranty. Talk to the service dept when you buy the engine, see if they'll put in another cam of your choice to keep the warranty good.
A Comp 268 or Crane 272 should work, other Forum members may have better suggestions
682XLR8,
Thanks again, I will check into the cams you mentioned. You also mentioned the Edelbrock 2101 intake, without EGR. Is it possible to use my old manifold and put a blocking plate over the EGR hole? I had the manifold boiled out and painted.
I don't see why you couldn't block the opening like you mentioned, although I've never done it, I always just swapped the manifolds out. Hope it works for you
