Default Brakes WHATS UP??

Hi All.

Well I got a new one, I had a rear calaper leak on my 78 vette. so I replaced both rears and while I was doing it thought I would replace all emergency brake parts and shoes.Well everything went as planned, but we were bleading the rear brakes like book said and went good, then we were going to do the front calapers (bleed) and low and behold both of them were leaking fluid??? I don't know but think we were bleading them right pumped 5 times held down to floor and opened the bleeder then closed bleeder and did same thing again till we had no air bubbles. Got both rears done and had pretty good pedel, started car then nothing, thats when we noticed the front (both) were leaking, now did we do something wrong or is it just a fluke hoe this happened?? By the way they were the origional calapers on front & rear never been changed car has less than 65,000 mi. on it and I bought it from origional owner. So see if you all can tell me if we did something wrong or not cause tomorrow it is back at it and put new calapers on front's.

make sure to fill when the level drops... try to do each side at a time...... or just open both bleeders and let gravity work it's magic.... make sure the lines are straight and no kinks

You can't affect the front by replacing the rear. Change the front and call it a day.

If they were original, they were due to be replaced. That old rubber has got to be rotten by now...

I replace mine every 25 years whether they need it or not...

Origional calipers on a '78 and you wonder why they're leaking???

Yea, it's time to replace them.

Is It possible the o rings pushed out past the point of no return and now they are stuck so the fluid is blowing right through?Take the old ones to autozone lifetime warranty get new brakes, and turn the rotors if possible If not go for some slotted rotors I changed the brake
hoses at this time also.I wished I would have used those shims though mine brakes still squeal a little bit.

Default Ok ya got me on the brake question

Hi All,

Ok ya got me on the brake question I guess it was a dumb question, but I didn't think so when I asked it. I know 25 years they should have already been changed, but the front ones wern't leaking when i started the back brakes, and thought maybe we were pumping them to much 5 times and hold to floor, thought maybe that was the problem?? But in the future I won't ask what I think is a liget. question don't want to get beat up over it (haha) But I see no one but 1 has answered me on speedo problem I am having? It bounces up & down when going 30 it says 60 is it the circut board or something else. See what ya can jump on me with this question (haha)

I'm sure pumping up the brakes created pressures in the fronts that exceeded the sealing power of 30 year old calipers. They were on their way out and you simply accelerated the process.

Dennis,
Don't ever feel silly about asking what later seems like a dumb question - we all have done it (I still do it all the time) - its only a dumb question to those who know the answer and some of those have short memories and forget that they were once new to all this too.
You will find for the most part that people here will be very helpful and those that it seems are beating you up are just pulling your leg and mean no harm.
Stick with it and don't be afraid to ask

I bought a 1977 leftover from a dealer in 1978. Five years later and just 6,000 miles and the rear brakes were leaking. I replaced the rears with SS sleeved calipers and a year later replaced the two front ones.

Sounds to me like your '78 was either way overdue or the fluid had been flushed a few times over the years. You should be good to go for a few more years. If you used Dot 3 or 4 brake fluid, I would recommend you flush the brake fluid every couple of years to get the most out of your calipers.

Good luck... GUSTO

I might be wrong but I never pumped the pedal before opening the bleeder. I open the bleeder slightly and stick a clear plastic hose on it and run that into a cup with brake fluid (open end of hose in the fluid) and THEN pump the pedal slowly until no more air bubbles are visible in the hose.

Pressure bleeder work best on these brakes, basically that's accelerated gravity bleeding (the pressure speeds it up quiet a bit).

I agree with above, get the AutoZone calippers or (since you're so close) get the VBP ones with the O-ring. I hate dealing with that core charge BS and wait for my money to be returned, that's the only reason why I got mine from the local store....
