Does your car have one of those fuel catcher cans under the hood sometimes those can be A problem. Most gas caps are vented or the tank would collapse due to pressure.Mine sits in the garage during the summer And I got some oil leaks but no gas smell Check that canister.

Back when I had a carb my garage always smelled of fuel. After the engine was shut down the heat would travel up into the carb and the fuel would percolate.

With EFI there is never any fuel smell and my gas cap is vented.

I'd replace the carbon canister as they sometimes will give off fuel odor if the vacuum valves don't work right. Check to make sure all the hoses to and from it are attached and not split.

Your '71 [and mine] has a non-vented gas cap. It seals the tank and shouldn't leak any fumes. But when you are working on something 35 years old, anything can happen...a split in an old hose, a crack in the hose near a clamp, damage to a tank fitting, etc. The other folks suggestions about the cannister and the vapor return lines are all possibilities. If you didn't have furel smell before you worked on the lines/tank, the problem is most likely to be where you were working. Think about all the stuff you worked on and double check everything there first. Good luck.

Check all the hoses at the tank and check the plastic vapour separator on the driver's side.Mine was cracked and it finally took a hard turn with a full tank to spot where the problem was.It wasn't obvious until I removed one of the mounting screws.
