I have been told that they look pretty average. I was looking into it ages ago and after reading some posts and seeing some pics, I went with a new dash pad. I haven't installed it yet but it's gotta look better than an overlay.
I'd be interested in the answer too. I am restoring my interior and I went ahead and ordered a 'new' dash pad. Trying not to cut corners...since taking the interior out is such a pain. Wanted to do it once.

If it is for the 78-82 interior, DO NOT USE ONE OF THOSE GIGANTIC PIECES OF CRAP. I hope I got my opinion across?
The can look "nice", but they fit like monkey flingings. Mine created too much material for the center gauges to mount correctly. Also, screwing the headlight switch back in was agonizing. It also doesn't wrap fully around the bottom edge of the dash. And then there is the benefit of not being able to use the glove box, because the cap doesn't have enough material to shut the door without being stuck between the new and old dash. It takes a screwdriver and enough patience to not stab yourself opening the door.
I'm sure opinions will vary on this subject though.
Being the broke *** tightwad that I am, I have pulled the vinyl skin off the original dash. I left as much of the foam as possible, then attached the overlay to the original panel. I don't have it all back together yet, but so far it looks and fits much better than just slapping it on top of the original.

don't waste your time, I got one of these dash caps for my '78 and that was the biggest mistake and a complete waste of time..all he says here is totally correct.
