With '68, '69 L-88 'vettes leaping again in value from just a year ago, those looking for or wishing to acquire a '71 LS-6 'vette better not wait too long.
After almost 20 years of research ( actually 2 mos shy) we have located 92 of the 188 production built LS-6's. Unfortunately I did not keep track of all those cars that were wrecked, just some, so we will never know how many survived, but we are approaching the 50% mark!
The 92 count DOES NOT INCLUDE deceased cars. Look for these cars to take a leap in value soon, as they follow in the L-88's footsteps.

earlyshark, I'm curious on one thing with the LS6 cars. When the book says that 188 LS6s and 12 ZR2s were built; since both cars use the same LS6 engine, does that mean a total of 188 LS6 cars (176 +12) or a total of 200 LS6 cars (188 + 12)?

There is some controversy over this. Several very knowledgeable NCRS members as well as my friends believe the total production is 200. I am not of this belief. I have been collecting factory documentation for these cars for years. I have an extensive collection of copies of original Corvette Order Copys, Protect-0-plate/w pamphlet, window invoices, car shippers, dealer sales invoices. The ZR2 optioned LS6 corvettes have the mandatory and optional ECL codes listed in different order than the regular LS6 corvettes. Both list the 1VLS6AA code, however there placement on the Order Copy is different, one being under Engine, the other under Comfort & Con. Both the ZR2 option and the LS6 option are listed on the Order Copy docs for those cars.
We know for a fact that the Tonawanda engine facility produced 212 coded engines for the LS6 option for 1971, this includes both CPW and CPX. Overbuild was approximately 10% for warranty claims/work. This would put the number of production cars at about 191, very close to the printed figure of 188. My personal belief is that the 12 ZR2 optioned LS6 Corvettes are inclusive of the 188 production figure of LS6 optioned Corvettes.

Yeah, what it amounted to was a blower motor mounted on the rear deck that blew warm air onto the rear window not the grid type that is used today. No ignorence, just not too familiar of the crap they used years ago,,,Peace,,,Moosie

Very good information on the LS-6 cars. I would love to have a vin list as well but that would probably be worth some money...Was LS-6 production year round, or was production for a brief period?

We have compiled a list of known/verified LS-6 Corvettes by VIN as well as options, colors, model style. The sheet listing the vins you are referring to was the initial survey vin list started by the late Dr. Hans Norberg.
We have VIN's and information on 6 of the 12 ZR2 LS6 cars. I have leads on 3 other possible cars as well, but have not confirmed them at this time.

I have been very cautious about releasing specific information on the LS-6 cars, mostly this information is available to current LS-6 owners when requested, as a service for participating in the survey/registry.
I do not want widespread fraud to happen to these cars, as has happened to the L-88 cars. I can count on one hand the number of fraudalent claims for LS-6 cars currently, unfortunately this can't be said of the L-88's.
LS-6 production was not available during the entire 1971 model year, this was further complicated by the fact that the option does show up in the initial 1971 Corvette brochure printed in August 1970 for the new model year. Specifics about their production beginning or vin has been kept low key to further prevent fraud, however the story of how their existence came about is quite interesting, and we have Mr. Duntov to thank personally for his persistance in this matter to keep the Corvette the flagship of the Chevrolet division for the model year 1971.

Earlyshark, great job as usual.I understand you wanting to prevent fraud on the LS-6's,but is there anyway to get a copy of your survey without you listing the vin#'s? I would want a copy for myself as a learning tool not to use for financial gain....Thanks JERRY

The one correction to the above post, is that this defroster/defogger does not blow hot air, it only circulates the ambient air inside the car, it is not hooked up to a heater of any sort.
The defroster vent grille is located on the drivers side rear deck lid on convertibles and located on the drivers side upper rear panel trim on coupes.
