Got a new one, got the brakes done on my 78 L82 all new calipers and e-Brake, bought a power bleader it worked awsome, the breaks are fine now to the new problem
I took car for a ride (I also put a new holly carb. on it ) and it back fires a bit but the main problem is it was smoking so bad I couldnt see behind me(neighbors must love it) got it back home and there is quite a bad oil leak on passenger side not from valve covers but the leak is so bad cant tell where it is comming from have to clean it then start it and see if I can see it. My question is what on the passenger side could be leaking it is below A/C comp. could it be the fuel pump? or the timming chain cover?? Quite a delema since I cant see it but it drips and the fan throws it all over hood etc. and when I had hood open and running it threw oil on fenders. If anyone can think of something for me to ck. let me know.

Hey Dennis,
Disconnect the drive belt for the fan/water pump and then clean the area as best as you can. Start it up and take your trouble light and have a look. Sounds like it might be from the fuel pump gasket.

rotgirl;
Thats what I am thinking also. Boy it looks hard to get to have to take off A/C comp. etc. Going to be a fun one (haha)
Thanks for the thought

I had kind of the same problem on my Streetrod. I had oil all over from my new crate motor and thought it was the pan gasket. Changed the gasket but it persisted. A friend of mine had this machine that you seal off the breather, dipstick hole, ect. Then you hook this machine up to the motor, I used the pcv. The machine makes smoke and pumps it into the engine. Then all you have to do is look for the smoke coming out to find the leak. Worked great, my front seal on my timing chain cover had rolled in and was leaking . I never heard of this before but it worked great.
I chased a similar leak to the bolt hole used to hole the mechanical fuel pump push rod in place when you take the mechanical fuel pump off. My engine block did not have a short bolt in the hole to seal it, so everytime you slow down some oil can slosh out and be blown by the fan all over the place.
Wow that sounds neat, I will try and figure out something to yry and do this with/ Sounds like a easer way to find the leak, have you got any ideas on how to make the thing? and what did you use for smoke? Sounds like a good invention chi ching///
Thanks for the info
Dennis
Yes i know what ya mean it is a mess with oil, and cant see where it is comming from. I know why mechanics get paid so well, it is a mess to figure out. Trying to figure out how to clean oil from under car? I can spray gunk on it and I have a pressure washer but my it sets to low to get at, maybe I could put it on jack stands and clean it thet way(dont ya know wife will like that in grass) if anyone can come up with a good idea PLEASE let me know how.
I just bought red rags at wal-mart/autozone and wiped everything down by hand. Since I drive the car every day, it only took a couple of Houston rains to equal a power washing.
Hey Dennis, I just ran down to my friends shop and got the name of the machine for you. It's called (ready for it?) "The Smoke Machine", go figure! Any way It's made by a company called Champion Engineering LLC. They have a phone number 714-879-9955. They have some sort of stuff you put in to this thing to make smoke. That's all I can tell you.

When I bought my '76, I wondered why he accepted my low offer, it was'nt until I drove it 120 miles home, I discovered it had a monster oil leak. Yep, you guessed it, exactly that missing bolt, and valve covers upside down. Fixed it in 30 mins, been sweet ever since.
Check that the bolt is in, it's very common for it to be missing.
