Hi All!
Just bought my 30 year dream 1970 coupe. Donnybrook green, black standard int. Originally 350-350 L46, not original motor now, 4 speed. O/A good condition. Motor was rebuilt py 2 owners back, power's not what I was expecting though. The block is 75, intake 69, Q-Jet 71. Came with an extra Aluminum manifold GM 14057053 CFM 44 (for 80-88) & Holly 6210-1 carb. Would intake-carb swap give better power? Many more questions to come.
Thanks in advance!
Is there a budget at work here and how far are you looking to go to achieve your goals. Also, do you even know what you want to do? Obviously, more power is the goal, but how far would you like to go?

Right now budget is low. Car runs good, power is just ok. My 04 Passat wagon with a 4 cylinder turbo (170hp) & 5 speed is quicker! Would the intake & carb I mentioned make a noticeable difference, or just a tune up? Don't have the specs on the engine rebuild.

The intake and carb swap may help, but you really don't know what's in the motor at all do you? Maybe the engine building chose a poor lifter and cam combo, or maybe smog heads.
A carb and intake swap will only get you so far if the heads and exhaust are restricting flow, and if your cam has no more room.
Thanks for the advice. No..don't know what was done to the engine when rebuilt and the previous owner is being evasive to give me the name of the previous owner (a friend who wanted the car back real bad) who had the work done. I did have the valve covers off and it does have crane cams roller tip rockers. Frustrating to say the least. In the mean time I'll drive it as is and do what I can to improve power.
Some other questions: How best to align the headlights when closed. One is high and one is low about 1/4" at the fender surface and gaps are uneven. Very close at front and almost 1/2" at rear edge.
Thanks
Just checked the engine today when it was completely warmed up. Pulled the air cleaner off and noticed the secondaries would not open when I pumped the throttle linkage wide open. What would keep them from opening? I suspect this may be why the power hasn't been very good. On the road the car is loud and I couldn't hear if they were opening. Wasn't hearing that glorious ROAR when they open.

It may be a poorly adjusted throttle cable, or something amiss with that carb.
Thanks!
A few questions,
I discovered today that the secondaries are not opening under full throttle, why I believe the power's not what I was expecting? Why might that happen?
Second how best to align the headlights flush with the body surface when closed? One is 1/4" low and other 1/4" high, and both are too far forward, mot evenly spaced on all 4 sides.
Thanks, Glenn

There are adjustment screws under the light assemblies that move it up or down. They can get them closer to what you want.
Thanks!

Had the same problem and found the throttle cable sheath was frayed inside preventing the cable from opening the secondaries fully. Also, cable may need adjusting forward in its mount.
