Default Gen Light won't turn off

The GEN light came on a couple of days and would not turn off.
Does anyone know what may be causing this problem and how to go about troubleshooting?

Are there any old threads on this?

Thanks in advance.

I would guess that your alternator is done. It may be putting out a minimal amount of voltage, but you may want to have it tested. Any Oreilly can test it while it's in the car, with a load on it.

I know, but by the way the question was worded I thought I'd throw that in.

I'll give you a fresh crisp high five if it really is just a thrown belt.

I got the alt checked. Looks like it it is putting out the right amount of voltage.

Now how do I test the alt belt now? It's certainly not broken.

Do you think a loose alt belt would cause this?
God!! I dont want to buy a new alternator now

Default One of two possibilities

Either the regulator is bad or, more likely, one of the rectifier diodes is shorted. If it is an original alternator, try to get it rebuilt locally. Good luck.

When they tested it did they put it under a load? Alternators can put out the proper voltage, but a low amperage.

By the way, a new alternator is easy to install, and they are not very expensive.

Is your car an all original?

Not sure what you mean by 'under a load'
The guy just stuck a meter on the alternator and said it showed good voltage.

Yes the car is all original, but not in the best shape.

Here are some pictures.

was it in the car and the car running? Headlights and ac fan running? Putting in under a load means make the alternator do some work when you check it (turn on headlights, ac fan, etc..) If he didn't do that he didn't test it. There is also a Load Bank for this test, but the lights and fan will work.

Yes,
The car was running, the radio and the blower was on. AC does not work

Well if he tested it under a load, and it still checked out then yes your alternator could be fine.

I don't understand why the GEN light would be on if the alt was fine though.
