I am in the process of building a '71 LT-1 engine. I am using the original block, heads, rods(pink),crank(forged),and aluminum intake manifold. I am upgrading the cam (hydraulic roller cam),valves, valve springs, pistons(slightly domed to gain just a bit of compression), and roller rockers. I have been looking at the comp extreme energy cam XE270HR. The car has a close ratio muncie with 3:70 gears. I am looking for a solid torque curve, some noticeable bumpity-bump at the exhaust, and considerable reliability for street use. My friend just installed this same cam in a '73 vette and it sounds very mild. Any comments as to what cam I should be looking at.
That cam is smaller than the cam that came with your LT-1,..or least would have less duration. If it were me I'd go the next bigger cam or stay with the great LT-1 cam. FWIW...
Reliable? Just go with the LT-1 solid flat tappet cam. Very relaible.
Hydraulic roller cams have advantages but high RPM and more reliable than a flat tappet are not on the list. Smoother idle is possible for a given power output with a roller cam but that was not on your list either. I think you were looking for a rougher idle.
You seem to be building a 100% stock looking from the outside engine. Do you would want it to sound 100% stock as well? You need some kind of solid lifter cam setup if you want it to sound right at idle.
We have a few guys here that are running close to stock LT-1's that might offer some aftermarket alternatives that would still have the solid lifter sounds that LT-1's were known for if you are dead set on not running the LT-1 cam.
