Default Rear bearings

Just bought rear bearing tools from hottvette parts in Tx. Anyone aware of issues with these guys? Secondly, I recall a very smart person posting and describing procedures for bearing removing and replacing...could not find it...help.

Thanks, Grizz

GTR1999 has helped quite a few with this job. I remember seeing a post a while back of a job he was doing rebuilding the TA's...but cannot find it now. Perhaps send him a PM and ask him for the link.

I just looked at that post 72 referenced from the place in TX. You can build yours following that and you can also drive your car with any brake fluid but would you?

One thing I learned with these is to think like a toolmaker/machine repairman(my background) not a car mechanic. This is not a shot at mechanics but just all the ones I've ever worked with or met have little understanding of machine work.

The kits I see for sale everywhere look great but try to set up new bearing to .0015-.002 with one, you'll have better luck buying power ball tickets.

There is never a need to replace the spacer and the shims vary too much in sizes.

You can rebuild these at home but to do it the best it can be you need to use a surface grinder. Most don't own one but you may have a shop in your area that will work with you, if not send them to me and I'll grind them for a min charge. The thing is the faces on both new and used spacer are not parallel. Typically they are out up to .005" this means you may get great setup spec's on the set up tool but once you press them on the spindle you find them out a few more thousands. Now I have found this a while ago and have since ground every set up I did and will do. I found it when a set when from .0015 - .003" Not good enough for me but if you follow that other post it's fine- your choice- your car.

Also keep in mind there has to be some endplay. When setting up the endplay is set at the tool. If you add 12,18,20" of leverage you will get more endplay by force but that is not what you're looking to do.

The last 4 spindles I set up were .0015-.002" the first set was on .0015 for both and the last set were both .002" If I were load them with a 18" bar they would show about .001-.002" more endplay BUT that is not correct and will damage the cages.

Good luck
