Need A Good Mechanic
i live in lewisville texas, having some problems with my vette. need a good mechanic that really knows his stuff. corvettes of dallas is a complete rip-off, would love a personal mechanic that knows vettes. anyone know someone in this part of texas? thanks
Be careful, sixfooter, I would hate to see trouble stirred up because of an opinion. I'm not saying you are wrong....would hate to see an opinion, valid or otherwise to be a source of trouble for a forum member. There are an awful lot of folks looking at what we say...be careful??

Hey Chief what exactly is wrong with your vette? There is a place in arlington called corvettes of Dallas that works on vettes. Also maybe some of us local guys might be able to help you out. Let us know what you need.
I stand corrected they are called Corvettes of North Texas. I have met the owner some time ago he seems pretty decent and there are always a lot of vettes in his shop they also do bodywork but like I said let us know if us locals can help you.
i have gone to some corvette "specialty" places, they ALL charge too much for the initial part of finding whats wrong with your car. what i need is an honest mechanic that wants to make some money, not a weekend do it yourselfer. if there is anyone on this forum that lives near me in texas, lewisville to be exact, i have many problems. u-joints, wiring, heater/ ac motor, etc. i have a 79 vette, i just need a regular mechanic who wants to make an honest buck. please no weekend warriors that dont have all the education please. thanks guys, i am very frustrated!
Diagnostic charges are necessary to insure the right parts are replaced. How much have you been charged for diagnostics? "Regular" mechanics are paid by the shop owner, unless they are self-employed. "Regular" mechanics would get lost doing rear bearings or headlight door vacuum systems. I would still take my 'vette to a Corvette specialist, if I didn't do my own work. They see the same problems day in and day out, and know what to look for based on symptoms. It can save you money in the long run, IMHO.
i understand diagnostics charges are necessary, but if you really believe that these specialty vette places dont overcharge, either you are one, and you dont overcharge, or you havent experienced it. the fact of the matter is, and this is confirmed by several local mechanics and vette owners, the vast majority of the "specialty" shops for vettes in dallas SERIOUSLY overbill their time to diagnose a problem, and drag their feet to give you a bigger bill. like it or not, mechanic or not, this is an unfortunate fact . dont want to be gruff, but sometimes reality bites, which is why even "real" mechanics work on the side which is what i'm looking for, OR a shop that will be fair.
Some of the things you mentioned like the U-joints can be done yourself. Is your car driveable? If you want the number of the folks in arlington to call and talk to them to find their rates I can provide it to you. Arlington from Lewisville is not all that far if you can get provided good services for a fair price.Have you checked the Lone Star Corvette club to see if they have any local Lewisville contacts. They have a website.
Knowledge is power. There are hundreds of Chevrolet smallblock reference works and several good ones specific to Corvettes. Buy a bunch and begin to teach yourself about Corvettes. Before too very long, you will be able to diagnose and repair your own problems, keep the shop expense money in your pocket, and not worry what the specialty shops charge.
thanks, i do intend to do that, but that doesn't help me much right now, hence my original post. again, if either on this forum, or somewhere in the lewisville area, there is a corvette mechanic that is good especially with electrical problems, that works reasonably on or off the books, PLEASE post the name and phone number. THIS will solve my problem. thanks, hope someone can help.

if you read my posts, you would see that i was looking for someone who had an education, not who stumbles through like me. learning by trial and error to work on a car is fine for your own vehicle, but charging money, and not knowing what your doing is what i was concerned about. i'm sure many people who have worked on their own cars "feel" their an expert, but those types of guys have already messed up my car. it wasn't a dig on guys with an education that work on weekends, but a desire to have a professional work on my ride.

First there, Chief, QUIT SHOUTING. Maybe you have a vision problem and need the font that big and bold. If so, mention that. Otherwise, you are coming across as shouting at all of us.
On this weekend warrior thing, you can bet you just screwed up royally. Thee are probably a dozen guys local to you who are not mechanics by trade but know how to fix a Corvette. And they may have come over and helped you for free.
You can bet the attitude you have shown won't help that.
One of the reasons the Corvette specialists are so high is they know specialized Corvette information that regular mechanics do not. However, 90% of the car is just plain Chevrolet in work and anyone can do it.
I have had Mike work on my baby ('82 Vette) several times and I can without reservation reccomend him!
You will not find anyone in the DFW area that knows more than Mike when it comes to Vettes.
FYI....
The place out in Rockwall Texas is called Corvette Corner. They are kind of expensive but I did have a good experience with them and can't bash the work they did on my brakes.
Call Mike!
