Hi guys, it's been awhile since I was on but I want to share some interesting data on passing the Oregon DEQ in my 81. My ride has a 75 motor with some kind of cam, I bouht it 1.5 years ago and this was the month it had to pass DEQ, no options 1975 and newer in Oregon/Portland. It took 8 times throughtthe test station, but they ere quite patient! My timing was the key to getting this passed. I kept radjusting the timing after each run, this was done last night and it was dark in the parking lot, but when I was adjusting I noticed tat there was an orange color I could see on the engine each time that I opened the hood to adjust. I thought it was the orange oil pan that I just cleaned after my oil change but afer shining the flashlght on it it dissappeared! As I got closer to passing the spec of <220ppm HC, the orange got brighter! I noticed that it was the headers! They were glowing red hot! All the way to the collector joint, and they got brighter the closer I got to passing the spec. I finally had the timing set to the point of barely running and the pipes were glowing on all sides of the engine! Very scarey site! It passed on the 8th run and I got it back to the garage and tuned it back to a running state! Pretty wild.
Here in CAL
car must be within 2 deg of emission sticker timing spec.
Also the smog req'ts are based off the body year,
regardless of the motor year.
So whatever the year model car came OEM, that is what the
look for. More cars are failed from non OEM equip
than pollutant levels.
