I just came in from another night of doing exactly that on my 79 L-82. I'm keeping it somewhat stock looking, not going for the blinged out, chromed out look. I painted the engine Chevy orange, to me all Chevy engines should be orange, not the "correct" light blue. I'm keeping the stock valve covers, ceramic coating the headers and basically did the entire compartment in krylon semi flat black, then silver parts are getting krylon dull aluminum. Oh also, I'm getting a new Edelbrock intake with the standard finish, my stock one looked like crap. If I can ever figure out how to get my digital camrea working right, I'll post some pics.
If you are going to keep that brown color, you would be crazy to start Mickey Mousing up the engine compartment.
Get rid of the bizarre blue covering on the hood cable and that other red thing and get down to deep cleaning, painting rusted items the proper colors and staying as stock as possible. Nice correct detail is best on a car like yours. Buy an NCRS guide.
No goofy stuff like steel braiding or hose covers from the 80's or painting the engine block like a 1965.

I kinda said the same thing only you said it better.
Yeah Vettebuyer195863, and gq82, I agree the cheap wire loom there does look goofy, and isn't staying Just playing around with ideas.
I think I'll check out some books on NCRS.org's website, before I decide to do anything... I just know when this engine blows, it's time for a new performance one, and a new tranny. Then all bets are off
