Default Correct color help....

Ok, I need some advice on this....I have a very nice 71' coupe. However, it is black. According to my black book...it dosen't look like black was a color choice in 71. I need help in determining what the correct color for my car might be. The protecto plate is gone, I think that is what would normally would tell me the paint code, right? Any other methods to determine what color the car may have been originally? I can't seem to find much info just based on the VIN#. Any help this is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Should be a paint and trim plate attached to the left door hinge pillar.

You're looking for the trim tag and not necessarily the protect-o-plate.

Look in the wells behind the seats for the original color. Another way is to look under the rugs. Also you could pull the map pocket panel off the right side of the dash and see the original color there.

That's pretty unusual, but sometimes they do get removed. Here is a pic - with the driver door opened you can just barely see the trim tag all the way on the right side of the pic.

will try to find a better pic.

Pull a tail light. Unless a very meticulous repaint was done, you might find original color behind the tail lights. Some folks leave the lights in and mask them off when repainting.
