(In my best Andy Rooney voice) Ever wonder why you dont see any Clone BB Vettes, but if you go to the Chevelle web page about half the cars there are clone SS's? And selling for decent $$ I might add. Seems like we should be out there buying up sb vettes and cloning 71 LS-6s or something. Who's in?
Actually, I sort of did that. Back in 1987 when I bought my first Corvette, a '70 Corvette Bronze LS-5 coupe, I wanted a '70 LS-6 Corvette, when I learned that Chevrolet killed that option through the de-proliferation progaram, I set about to make my own. I bought an original CRR coded LS-6 engine from a Chevelle and installed it. Although my Corvette was optioned with C60, which meant I had a M20 and 3:08 ratio, the car was a terror, that engine after being built to stock specs with all GM parts, with only a .0010 overbore dynoed on an engine dyno at 493 hp.
But still wanting a real LS-6 car, my next 'vette was a '71 War Bonnet yellow LS-5 coupe and again I made the original engine into an LS-6 look-alike, with correct heads, intake, carburetor, internals and so forth. It too was a phenominal running beast, however again this car was optioned as M20, C60 & 3:08 ratio.
Years go by and I have owned 5 additional LS-5's, but never could afford the real McCoy. Finally back in 2000 I located and snagged my first '71 LS-6, and last year snagged my second. I have been told that my old cars are still around somewhere and have heard rumors that they have been passed off as real LS-6 Corvettes. I have kept documentation on those cars, so should anyone run into a '70 with vin # 6664 or '71 with vin # 21524, they are not real LS-6 cars, but just my attempt at a much younger age to have something close to the real McCoy.

Interesting stuff. I have nothing but love for my 3:08 gears, I can still fry up some rubber if I want to and cruise the highway at about 2200RPM. Lots of guys poopoo them but they work for me
