I notice a lot of people changing their engine bonnet in favour of a full coverage later model style hood. I wonder what the majority of reasons are? I have my wiper door working although it doesn't seem to want to seat fully closed, still it is enough of a "neato" feature that I will not give up on it. I remember years ago when I first rode in my brothers 68, it was such a cool thing if it started to rain and he had to activate the wiper system. That and the headlights popping up were just part of my fascination with these cars. The fact they were made of plastic, well is there anything else, yeah the thing screamed thru the gears like a banchee and looked like it was going at warp speed just parked.
Shoot I've done thousands of miles in mine and yet I have never had it out of the garage.
I guess I had a question here somewhere.....oh yeah the wiper door thing.

Reason: spelling :)
I've got the long hood on mine. The basic reason to get aaway from the wiper door was room underhood. It's just one less thing to have to work around. And I NEVER have any problem with the wipers- but the car hasn't seen rain in like, 30 years either..
IMO, the only reason to change the hood would be to have room for taller carb, to provide cold air inlet, or...because you can't fix the darned wiper door. The early C3 vacuum wiper door is better in all respects...if it works. Some patience, a vacuum gage, and some "elbow grease" is all that you need for the wipers and door (oh, and maybe some ca$h, if parts are required).
One of the things I love the most about my 72 and 68 is my wiper doors I spent a few hours tuning them to work perfectly. My 72 hat tall wipers on it and would catch the door upon opening so I replaced them with some short GM wipers and lubed everything and they work awesome. I always show people how they work and they are really surprised.
I agree with you that the wiper door is a neat feature. While restoring my car I opted to replace the long L88 hood that came with the car for a short BB hood and the wiper door. It was quite a puzzle and not knowing exactly how it was assembled I had it apart about 4 times before it all worked perfectly, but it was worth it. Oh, and I doubt if the car will ever see rain, but the wipers work!
