Pack some grease into the open side of the seal- it faces the inside. cut a piece of paper and wrap that around the shaft to protect the seal as it passes over the flats.. I've never tried to push the seal in with washers and tightening the nut. Don't know how tough the shaft really is. The tool I gave you the number for is pretty short and fits the shaft- it'll guide the seal and keep it straight. Stick whatever on it and drive it home.
