When starting my car, the starter sometimes grinds when I first turn the key as if the engine was already running. It will engage the flywheel ok after the 2nd or 3rd attempt. It would do this 1 out of 6 times. What's causing this?

I would look at my flywheel if I were you
If its good...your stater may not be engaging properly.
Freespinning....look at the solinoid.
Make sure it is lined up straight to the block.
Bad sounds can come from a starter....it can also knock teeth off you flywheel if its misbehaving'
Is it on tight?
Does it do this at a cold start or just after its been run?

This started happening on my 79 late last summer. I ran it for about 2 more weeks and then one morning the starter kept grinding but never did engage. Long story short is that the snout of my starter had broken in to
