No AC Heater Core ??
While I have the entire 454 block out of my 74....might this be a good time to replace the heater core? This is a NO AC car and it appears that the core is accessible through the firewall, rather than 5 miles into the passenger side dash - like an AC car. I've done that surgery once before on a 72.
Does anyone know for sure that the core can be changed out from the engine compartment on a no - ac car?
Measure the old core very carefully and compare to the new. That is a tight fit and even a minor variation of 1/8 to 1/4" in width/height can make the job difficult. Some places sell what seem to be "generic" Chevrolet cores, saves shelf space, and they can pose difficulties. My local AC Delco shop supplied the one in my pics specifically for Corvette and it went in without any difficulty. Another option is to get the old re-cored at a radiator shop.
I had that job down to about 1 1/2 hours compared with 7-8 for A/C cars. It's hard to believe that more than six years have passed since I did that job in 2000....I sold the 1979 locally in 2003 and that heater core is still leak-free.
