Default Ignition Shields

I have headers on my 76 vette...will the spark plug shields/ignition shields still fit on the engine? The previous owner did not have these installed...so I would like to buy and install them.

The distributor/coil shield should fit. I don't see where the shields down the sides of the engine will work with the headers, though. The only way to find out is try. They might with some brands of headers and not others depending on the design.

Yes you can! The distributor shields and the 2 side shields will fit with headers. Of course the side shields will not fit. Just cut an opening in each side shield at the height of your wire looms. Make the opening large enough for the four ignition wires and an insulator such as a rubber grommet or plastic conduit to protect the wires from the sharp metal edges. Large plastic conduit holds in place very well and you'll need to use tie straps to secure it inside the shield. I used OEM style conduit which is heavier than some of the aftermarket stuff. You can still utilize the original lower mounting points, just don't cut them off.

This is a Vortec engine, so the 2 brackets that hold the distributor shield in place will be different than yours. I had to fabricate these brackets that mount to the rear of the heads.

I am still at work, so these are the only photos I have available.

I am thinking the dist cover and boomerangs will work fine even if they are a royal pain in the azz. The shields at the plugs probably won't fit with tubular headers. Probably worth a try but NOBODY else does this.

P.S. - I actualy LIKE the under manifold factory method. Clean and out of sight. Just change the wires when you overhaul the engine and use only the best wire. Just my opinion, your results may vary, void in Alaska and where prohibited.

I'm one of the few who likes the ignition sheilding. I use it all except for the side pieces. I don't think there is any way to make those work with headers. Like Mark said, get good wires and you're set for several years.
