I have a thread for the whole front suspension rebuild and motor, but I thought that I would start a thread specifically for the engine build. I had forgotten the camera when I installed the crank. So far I have installed the crank bearings, checked the crank tolerance and then installed the crank. I then set the ring gaps and installed the rings. Next I installed the rod bearings and pistons. check out the piston install tool. It is way faster than the adjustable tool. I will take more detailed pics going forward. If anybody has a request for a specific picture let me know.
Crank installed, along with #1 and #2 pistons in their bores
Thanks everyone. This has been a lot of fun.
I haven't run the numbers for HP. There is a dyno across the street, so I will be headed over there to tune and check the numbers.
I got a little more done last night. The cam is in and the time is set along with the oil pump installation. I forgot to grab the oil filter housing so that stopped me from putting on the pan.
Chris
i put a mark on the crank referencing the old gear mark just to make sure things looked "right" with the new gear.
Set the cam in place and lubed
I was trying to get a pic of the marks lining up when #1 was up.
don't forget the lower oil dipstick tube before you install the pan. I have one extra because it doesn't fit my later style block that has a longer 1pc dipstick tube. Let me know if you want it.
And weld that pickup to the pump so it won't come off
MYBAD, Thanks for the reminder. I will weld that pickup in place Friday. I think I have a new dipstick tube. I'll have to check and let you know. Thanks for the offer.

PM or email me if you want it.
That lower tube does not come with the chrome tubes that you can get at the part store. I had a hard time finding one, finally I found it on Ecklers website. When I received it I noticed that it doesn't fit ... then I couldn't find a longer dipstick tube for the newer blocks anywhere, had to order that from a Chevy dealer...
Heres a little Monday pick me up. I've had camera issues so I've missed a bunch of progress picks. Here it is ready for install. I put the headers on so I could get the plug wires run and make sure that everything lined up correctly. I don't want to have to struggle with stuff when the motor is in the car. I still need tofind valve covers and I think I am going to by the Accel corrected dist cap.
Dunno? ... pics can lie ... but looks like typical chevy orange engine enamel ... rather than the preferred "GLYPTAL" brand which is a much darker brick red-brown.
Thanks everyone. I hope to have the trans on tonight and back in the car and running shortly there after.
fotyfo rustoleum is the old school way to go as I was told. Most don't bother with the valley. Nobody would know if I had painted the valley or not, but it was the right thing to do.
