Default Placing jack stands.

How many jack stands would I need to hold up a 78 Vette before going under ?
Where exactly do I need to place them ?

it should be right behind the front wheels where the frame is straight. dont place them on the part of the frame that bends upward or you might feel this Really heavy weight on your chest

Under the rear door seam, where the frame and the crossmember come together. It makes a little triangle there. Look in your owners manual, that is the prefered jack area for changing a tire as well.

I know what the manual says but unless I'm working on the front suspension I always place the front stands under the lower control arms at the spring pocket/shock mount. Virtually NO flex in the frame this way, and no problems opening doors. And I only jack the Vettes from the side at the very end of the trans crossmember, I never do one corner at a time or under the front crossmember(dents!) or the rear diff.

edit: I've done like this every winter for 23 years with my black79.

Kaps, I hear ya! I also jack my vette up from the side, raising both the front and rear wheel (on a side) at the same time. And it does bother me a bit to see how much weight is out in front of the stands (I have a bigblock) when I put the stands in the recommended positions, but I still think they should be under the frame.

Could the manual described locations be more of a safety/liability situation for the mechanics? I admit ya need to crawl underneath to set the front stands the way I like to do it but I AM safety conscious and don't spend any more time under there setting the stands than I need to! I always set the rear one first so at least there's something there if the jack colapses. And I do have a good floor jack.
I hear so many guys talking about doors and hoods that won't open and also worrying about cracking T-tops.

If you look at the diagram in the owners manual it shows jackstand locations out in front of the engine as well, probably for just the reason you're talking about. I use the 4 points between the wheels and have never had any problems with frame twisting or doors not opening/closing. It really depends on the condition of your frame.
