There is a small spring loaded button on the body of the switch itself.

Pull the **** to it's out position, then press that button, and finish pulling the **** and shaft out of the switch.

It's so easy you'll kick yourself after you get it out. Just remember that you cannot push the button until the **** and shaft are in their out position.

what he said. You have to be a contortionist to get to the button to push it though.

Standard GM **** release. No matter what the switch looks like, it's got one of those little beasties.

Mopar did the same thing for a long time, and even my old Scout II had one like that.

I got the **** off my 70 switch, but, how does one get the switch body off the instrument panel?

IIRC, the bezel on the outside screws onto the switch body. If it's tight, try rocking the switch back and forth a bit.

Found it. There is a slotted threaded cylinder that screws in from the front bezel that is visible after removing the ****. Used a wide screw driver to take it off and install the new switch. Headlight problem solved too.
Thanks for the replies.
